From Shoeshine Boy to Co-CEO: The Unbelievable Journey of Vi Do
A hot summer afternoon, a Choco chocolate pie and a flipped coin that changed the landscape of child rescue in Vietnam forever.
In this episode of Citizen FortyFour Vietnam, I sit down with someone whose life story sounds like it belongs in a movie. Exactly 17 years ago today, Vi Do joined Blue Dragon Children’s Foundation with the intention of staying for just six months. Today, he serves as the organization’s Co-CEO.
But long before he was leading one of the most impactful NGOs in Southeast Asia, Vi was a 15-year-old child surviving in a Hanoi slum, shining shoes to get by. He was what local society coldly referred to as a “child of the dirt.”
Everything changed at 2:00 PM on a scorching summer day when he crossed paths with a foreigner named Michael Brosowski. Vi didn’t speak English, and Michael didn’t know the exact road ahead, but an offer of weekend English lessons - and a chocolate pie - set off a 22-year chain reaction. Vi flipped a coin on trust, and in doing so, altered the course of his life.
